Couple walks by. Both
talking on their cellphones.
Also, holding hands.

You cynic! How do you know they weren't talking to each other? Being romantic and contributing to the service provider's revenue in one swell foop!

Damn, Jabberwock scooped me to that. Also, it might have been one of those cell-phone plans where you can talk to your partner free. Holding hands and talking without having to turn their heads - give them points for ingenuity.

with jabberwock and cat on this one.

how many times have you held someone's hand, while talking on your cellphone? Esp, while talking to someone else... Diehard romantics, these.

I have to take the opposite view. I think cell phones have killed the ordinary romance in life. I was at a wedding where the groom and bride were on the cell phone all the time talking to all those friends calling up to wish them. Friends are important and these are friends who think you are important enough to remember to call you on your wedding day - but ... come on people, for some wierd reason you actually want to commit to one person for a lifetime. You want to pay some more attention, me thinks.

I like cellphones. I also like haiku. As far as holding hands in public is concerned, it is a lewd and immoral act that should be banned at the earliest.

Nokia - connecting people.

Jai / BM / Cat: Who said I was being cynical? You're just assuming that based on the last, oh, 500 odd posts. The poem per se suggests neither that they were talking to other people, nor that I was criticising them.

For the record, I'm fairly sceptical about them talking to each other - but see BM's point about how still being connected enough to each other to hold hands even when you're talking to other people is kind of romantic.

Anon: I don't know if cellphones are to blame though. I mean, the kind of people who will spend their weddings yakking away on their cellphones would probably have found some other way of distracting themselves if cell phones weren't around (perhaps chatting up the relatives who were there). If anything, the annoying thing about people talking on cellphones at their wedding is that they end up not talking to the people who've actually taken the trouble to come for the damn thing.

Also, well, if you're marrying someone, arguably you'll get more than enough time where you'll be paying them attention. And with the things people have to wear in most Indian weddings, you can see why you may not want to have memories of your spouse from that day.

raoul: Would this ban include prohibitions on the playing of certain Beatles songs?

anon.: Yes

I think they were talking to their respective spouses on the cellphone. Oh to be chattering away to your spouse while holding hands with your lover... could anything be more romantic?

I second harry, that is the first thing that came to my mind, coochie cooing with their spouses who have gone to far far lands to make enough money, while romancing with the love :)

my theory is that they were talking to each of their parents, and would have to switch cell phones in the middle- that way it would justify it from cynicism to a certain extent. maybe.
