Okay, it's not often that I get excited about an upcoming film. In fact, you could say I've made it something of a hobby of mine to avoid falling prey to hype.
But the fact is that there are few novels I've read in the last five years that cry out to be made into movies as much as No Country for Old Men. And there's no one, just no one making movies today who I think would do a better job of converting McCarthy's book into film than the incredible Coen Brothers. Add to that some pitch perfect casting (Javier Bardem as Chigurh, Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Bell) and you've got yourself one hell of a movie. This one I'm watching first day first show. Yessir.

I’m told by a friend who managed to watch it at Cannes that its wonderful. If I remember rightly, the coens turned up at Cannes on a cruise ship, which is sort of trivia, coz of sailing to Byzantium.
Anyway sad they could not hog the limelight, they were beaten by better and more sensitive movie. But among all the other reasons, this movie is important because, it reflects a sense of Americanism, (as known from mockingbirds, cassidys, and alike )which is so fast dying into CGIs and other such mindlessness.
And gere I thought the only book adaptation people (excluding me, of course) were getting excited about was The Kite Runner. :D

Szerelem: :-). The difference is that I'm not sure even the Coen brothers can live up to the sawed-off shotgun-like immediacy of McCarthy's prose, whereas the Kite Runner is so patently trite and Hollywoodish that Marc Forster (who I actually think is pretty good) can't help improve on it.

Have you seen the Life and Opinions...? I caught sight of the DVD at Blockbuster the other night but I dithered because y'know you haven't reviewed it far's I can remember.

I saw The Kite Runner trailer recently and it was kind of gag inducing.
Btw, I thought for sure that the movie version of The Da Vinci Code would be better than the book - how could it not be, it was made for hollywood - but it was awful. In my defense I saw it only because I heart Sir Ian. Curious about how The Kite Runner turns out therefore.
Also read your take on The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which I was considering reading (I didnt mind Moth Smoke - not great, not bad) and was wondering if you could expand on that. If it is trite in the Kite Runner sense then I would like to pass and stick to my pile of location specific books I need to finish off.
Btw, what has happened to your The Old Guitarist display picture?
add to this the upcoming adaptation of McCarthy's The Road, and it's probably a good time to be him.
