Two elections.
Both marked by lackluster alternatives.
Both resulting in outcomes that are cause for relief, if not for celebration.
Of shoes -- and ships -- and sealing wax -- Of cabbages -- and kings -- And why the sea is boiling hot -- And whether pigs have wings.

The second I can understand, but the first? Padel is an underwhelming poet. Her triumph is a triumph of politics, not of poetry. See this, for instance.
Cat: Agree that Padel is an underwhelming poet, but I don't know that Mehrotra is any better. Neither of them is a patch on Walcott, obviously (hence the lackluster candidates) but if we had to be stuck with one of them I'd rather it was Padel just so I don't have to be subjected to a lot of media nonsense about Indian poetry in English.
