...and dreamed it was still night.

Singers have multiplied more than traffic lights.
I met one at the crossroads. He said, "Are you the Devil?"
Such hope in his eyes I had to say yes.
He said, "I'll pay no mind to your reputation."
I said, "I wouldn't sell it for less."
He said, "I've got no soul, but I've got a guitar"
I said, "I've got no money, but I've got the blues."
He said, "I've got something to offer."
I said, "I've got nothing to lose."

I met the devil at the crossroads and he said, "All I ever wanted was to play the blues."
He said, "I'll make a deal with you. I'll give you the wings of my back if you'll give me the song in your heart."
I said, "I know where this will end, but I don't know where to start."

Much too much Johnson happened?
Fun stuff. The second piece is very John Prine-esque in its humor.
Gawd, this one was good.
??!: Sort of. Actually, I've been reading Sherman Alexie's Reservation Blues, which led to Johnson, which led to this post.
km: Thank you.
Anon: Thanks
you bet your bippy falsie...this was gooooood.
Whoa! What awesome lyrical undercurrent in this anecdote...and a different piece on this blog... reminds me of Dylan...
PS: Excuse my naivety...but who is Johnson?
anon: Thanks
hopscotch: Thanks. And you've seriously never heard of Johnson? Do yourself a favor and go listen to him right now. The man's only one of the greatest blues musicians of all time.
damn good stuff..i loved it! :)
@ Falstaff: Thank you. Yes, I hadn't heard of him before... and am downloading some of him right away...
@Hopscotch: You may also want to check out some great covers of (and tunes inspired by) Robert Johnson's songs. Some notable ones:
Cream's "Crossroads blues", Rolling Stones' "Love in vain", an entire album of RJ covers by Eric Clapton called "Me and Mr. Johnson", Clapton's cover of "Malted Milk" on his "unplugged album", Led Zeppelin's "Traveling riverside blues" etc etc.
(Yes, I know I've skipped Jeff Beck, SRV, Mayall and about two million other fantastic musicians who've covered RJ....)
@ km: Thanks so much :)
